Trail description

Starting in Gunnerside village, this walk climbs through the woods and pastures of Gunnerside Gill to the ruins of the Sir Francis Mine, the Bunton workings and Blakethwaite smelt mill. The valley was mined intensively for lead in the 18th and 19th centuries, when dammed streams were released to scour hushes such as Bunton and Friarfold. The Sir Francis Mine opened in 1864 and was the first to use compressed air drills.
