Trail description

Arafune is a flat-topped mesa on the border of Gunma and Nagano, named because it looks like a ship sailing through rough seas, and is one of Japan's 200 famous mountains. This route climbs from the south by Hoshio Pass onto the long summit plateau to the Tomoiwa cliff at its northern end. Tomoiwa drops about 120 m vertically, and people have died falling from it, so keep away from the edge. The mountain lies in the Myogi-Arafune-Saku Kogen Quasi-National Park.
