Trail description
This short climb starts at the Chalets de Charmant Som car park, where the road up from the Col de Porte ends, and follows the paths through the alpine pasture to the summit cross of the Charmant Som at 1,867 m. Unlike most Chartreuse summits, it is a rounded mountain of Urgonian limestone covered in alpine meadows, and its pastures have been grazed since the Middle Ages. Chartreuse Tourisme notes that it is the last alpine pasture in Isère that makes and sells its own cheese on site, and that after about half an hour across the pasture the view opens over the Combe Noire to the Grande Chartreuse monastery below. The walk is about 1.0 km one way, with some 185 m of climbing.
