Lugano to Gandria Olive Trail
Trail description
The walk starts at the lakeside guidepost in Cassarate, Lugano, and follows the marked Sentiero dell'olivo up through Castagnola and then along the south-facing shore of Lake Lugano to the guidepost by the boat landing in Gandria. Information points along the way, with texts by the City of Lugano's cultural division, deal with olive growing, which gives the path its name, and with the area's history, geology and archaeology. The shore path to Gandria lies in a landscape listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes, Sites and Natural Monuments of National Importance, and a botanical survey in 2014 recorded 343 plant species along it, 54 of them on the Swiss Red List. Gandria is a village at the foot of Monte Brè whose old centre is closed to traffic. The walk is about 3.4 km one way, with some 125 m of climbing.
