Trail description

A 2.8 km loop with about 70 m of climbing on the Lake Matheson Walk around Lake Matheson (Te Ara Kairaumati), a small glacial lake near Fox Glacier in South Westland. The lake is famous for its reflections of the Southern Alps, taking in Mount Haast, La Perouse, Aoraki / Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. It was a traditional food-gathering place for local Māori. Early settlers named it after Murdoch Matheson, a cattle farmer on the Cook River flats in the 1870s.
