Trail description

From the Les Tines car park, forest paths climb to the Le Chapeau buvette above Le Lavancher and continue a few hundred metres to a viewpoint over the Mer de Glace. The Chamonix tourist office calls the Mer de Glace the largest glacier in France; its lower tongue once reached the valley at the hamlet of Les Bois and was known as the Glacier des Bois. Early visitors who crossed the glacier from Montenvers with their guides came down this bank by the steep Chapeau path. The viewpoint looks over the glacial lakes and the Arveyron gorge as well as the Aiguilles de Chamonix. The walk is about 3.2 km one way, with some 475 m of climbing.
