Trail description
The walk starts at Pian del Re (2,020 m), where the Po rises, and climbs the V13 path past the Colletto above the Vallone dei Quarti and over the Colle del Viso (2,650 m) to the Rifugio Quintino Sella, which stands above the Lago Grande di Viso at 2,640 m. Pian del Re lies in the Parco Naturale del Monviso and is the easiest place to see Lanza's alpine salamander, an amphibian found only in a few valleys of the Cottian Alps in Piedmont and on the neighbouring French side. The hut was inaugurated on 23 July 1905 and is named after Quintino Sella, who led the first Italian party to the top of Monviso (3,841 m) in 1863 and then founded the Club Alpino Italiano. The walk is about 6.4 km one way, with some 745 m of climbing.
