Trail description
The walk starts at Oropa, close to the sanctuary, and climbs the paths of the Conca di Oropa past the Rifugio Rosazza, set at 1,830 m between Monte Mucrone and Monte Tovo, to the Lago del Mucrone at 1,894 m. The small lake fills part of a glacial step and is the source of the Oropa stream; it has drawn visitors since the 19th century, and the Biella painter Lorenzo Delleani painted it several times. The whole Oropa basin is protected as the Sacro Monte di Oropa special nature reserve, and the Sacro Monte itself, twelve chapels built in the 17th and 18th centuries and filled with life-size painted terracotta statues, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The walk is about 5.2 km one way, with some 720 m of climbing.
