Pointe des Trois Communes
Trail description
The walk starts at the Col de Turini and follows a path up to Camp d'Argent, then the GR 52 over the Baisse de Tueis to the Pointe des Trois Communes, ending at the Redoute fort on the summit; about 600 m of it follows the D68, which is closed to traffic in winter. At 2,080 m this is the highest point of the Authion massif, which lies in the core zone of the Mercantour National Park. The Redoute des Trois Communes was built in 1897 on the site of an old Sardinian battery, as part of the Séré de Rivières defences, and was one of the first forts built with reinforced concrete. Left as it was, it bears witness to the fighting of April 1945 in which the 1st Free French Division retook the Authion from the Germans. The walk is about 4.9 km one way, with some 460 m of climbing.
