Trail description
A 3.1 km stretch of the Sliding Sands Trail, with about 330 m of height difference between the trailhead by the summit road and the floor of Haleakalā Crater on Maui. Sliding Sands and Halemauʻu are the two main trails into the crater from the summit area, and both are National Recreation Trails. Despite its name, Haleakalā Crater is geologically an erosional valley, and its interior is dotted with volcanic features including large cinder cones. Haleakalā National Park was designated in 1976 and covers 134.6 km2, most of it wilderness.
