Trail description

A 2.9 km climb of about 150 m from the Kalanianaʻole Highway up to Makapuʻu Point, the south-easternmost point of Oʻahu and the site of the Makapuʻu Point Light. The point was the landfall for all shipping from the American west coast to Honolulu, and shipping interests began pressing for a lighthouse there in 1888. The light has the largest lens of any lighthouse in the United States, an optic twelve feet (3.7 m) tall with over a thousand prisms. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
