Trail description

A 4.4 km climb from Kalaʻau Place at the back of Kuliʻouʻou Valley in East Honolulu, up the Kuliʻouʻou Ridge Trail to the crest of the Koʻolau Range. Long switchbacks climb through Formosa koa and logwood planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934-35, then the trail follows the broad ridge through ironwood and Cook pine past a shelter with two picnic tables. Beyond the shelter the ridge narrows, the path is rough and eroded in places, and the steep sections have plastic steps. The trail ends on an eroded summit hill with a wide view over the windward side of Oʻahu and Waimānalo. It crosses a public hunting area, so wear bright clothing and stay on the trail.
