Trail description
A 9.1 km walk with about 400 m of climbing along the Appalachian Trail east from Newfound Gap Road, past Charlies Bunion and a little beyond. Charlies Bunion is a 1,685 m mountain on the state line between Tennessee and North Carolina, named for the large boulder-like protrusion just below its summit on an otherwise sheer northern face. It is a rare bare-rock summit in the Smokies, and its steep north face drops 609 m in just over a mile to the headwaters of the Middle Fork of the Little Pigeon River.
