Trail description
A 16.9 km traverse on the GR 131 from the Refugio El Pilar south along the Cumbre Vieja, over the Deseada volcano at about 1,930 m and down to Fuencaliente, with about 620 m of climbing. The Cumbre Vieja is the active volcanic ridge that forms the southern half of La Palma, its crest and flanks pockmarked by dozens of craters and cones. Its latest eruption, which began on 19 September 2021 at Cabeza de Vaca, sent lava flows over settlements and banana plantations and destroyed thousands of buildings.
