Trail description
The walk starts in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, a short way east of the monastery, and climbs through the pinewoods of Monte Abantos, higher up on the Camino de Abantos (GR 10), past the Fuente del Cervunal spring to the 1,753 m summit. The mountain is named after the Egyptian vultures and other vultures that were once common here and were known locally as abantos. The pinewood on the slope above the town grew from replanting begun at the end of the 19th century, and the Pinar de Abantos and the neighbouring La Herrería estate have been protected as a Paraje Pintoresco since 1961. The walk is about 5.5 km one way, with some 755 m of climbing.
