Botmaskop

Trail description

A steep 3.5 km climb of about 640 m from the Uniepark side of Stellenbosch, up forestry tracks through the plantations and the Botmaskop Nature Area, then on a rocky path through fynbos to the summit beacon of Botmaskop, at 914 m. The walk is steep but non-technical most of the way; just below the beacon a short rocky gully and a boulder field need some easy scrambling, with a few moves using the hands. From the top the view reaches across to the Simonsberg, and sunrise and sunset there are well worth the climb. Walking in a group of six or more is advised, as there have been several robberies on the lower slopes.
