Trail description
A flat 1.8 km out-and-back walk on the path through the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve, starting from Prospect Hall Road near the Riverside Mosque in Durban North. The reserve lies at the mouth of the Umgeni River and protects 76 hectares of natural estuary; it was proclaimed in 1977 and declared a national monument in 1980. Three protected mangrove species grow here, black, red and white, and the animals include mudskippers, fiddler crabs and the mangrove kingfisher. The reserve also has an elevated boardwalk with three trails through the swamps and a bird hide.
