Trail description

The hike starts at the Salvamont refuge by Lacul Zănoaga (1,997 m), Romania's deepest glacial lake and an authorised camping spot, and climbs through dwarf pine and scree to Vârful Păpușa (2,508 m). Păpușa is one of only two Retezat summits above 2,500 m, rising above Șaua Pelegii next to Peleaga, with steep rocky ground near the top. These high Retezat paths are considered dangerous in winter.
