Trail description
The walk starts where a narrow asphalt lane ends on the western slope of the Picota, in the Serra de Monchique, and follows paths east up to the summit, where it ends beside the fire lookout. At 774 m the Picota is the second-highest point of the Serra de Monchique and of the Algarve, after Fóia (902 m); the range is a Late Cretaceous intrusion made mostly of nepheline syenite. On clear days the summit gives a 360-degree view that takes in a long stretch of the Algarve coast and the sea. The walk is about 1.2 km one way, with some 130 m of climbing.
