Trail description

A 3.7 km climb of about 620 m from the forest roads above Santo Antonio de Nordestinho to Pico da Vara, at 1,103 m the highest point of Sao Miguel in the Azores. The mountain is the heart of the range where the Azores bullfinch or priolo, one of Europe's rarest birds, lives in native laurel forest. The summit lies in a protected nature reserve and a free permit is required for the climb; the path is steep and overgrown in places.
