Trail description

The walk starts at the hamlet of Pé da Serra and climbs forest paths and tracks through the Serra de Sintra to the Peninha summit, ending next to the sanctuary. The present chapel of Nossa Senhora da Peninha dates from 1690, the work of the hermit Pedro da Conceição with alms from the faithful and the support of King Pedro II, and its nave is lined with azulejo panels dated 1711 showing the life of the Virgin. Beside it stands a romantic-revivalist small palace commissioned in 1918 by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, the owner of the Quinta da Regaleira. The route is about 3.3 km one way, with some 250 m of climbing.
