Trail description

A 2.4 km climb of about 225 m over the Portela do Homem pass, 822 m, on the Spanish border in the Serra do Gerês, past the Roman milestone XXXIV of the Geira. The Geira, Via XVIII of the Antonine Itinerary, linked Bracara Augusta (Braga) with Asturica Augusta (Astorga) and keeps more milestones than any other Roman road in Iberia. In 1384 the invading army of John I of Castile crossed the pass and was driven back by shepherds and friars.
