Trail description

The walk starts in the village of Curral das Freiras and climbs the old stepped path up the valley side to Eira do Serrado, ending at the viewpoint beside the hotel. Laid mostly in 'passo de boi' cobbled steps, the path was for several centuries one of the village's main access routes and lost that role only in 1959, when the first road reached the village centre. The valley is a huge basin eroded by rain and wind in older, weaker rock that was long mistaken for a volcanic crater, and the village stands on flat ground created millions of years ago by a landslide of about 100 million cubic metres on the valley's eastern side. The route is about 3.2 km one way, with some 500 m of climbing.
