Trail description

The loop starts at the viewpoint at the end of the Estrada do Caldeirão, on the rim of the Caldeirão, descends the Caldeirão path into the crater and circles the lagoons on the crater-floor path before climbing back to the rim. The Caldeirão is a collapse caldera at the top of Corvo's central volcano, about 2 km across and up to 305 m deep; its floor holds a lake and a few small volcanic cones that in Azorean tradition represent the nine islands of the archipelago. Its wetlands are a Ramsar site, and the official PRC02COR trail leaflet asks walkers to stay on the trail, close gates behind them and leave the grazing cattle, horses and goats undisturbed. The loop is about 4.5 km long, with some 260 m of climbing.
