Caldeira do Faial

Trail description

The loop leaves the Miradouro da Caldeira on the Trilho do Perímetro da Caldeira (PRC04FAI), passes Cabeço Gordo, at 1,043 m the highest point of Faial, and continues round the rim of the Caldeira back to the viewpoint. The caldera is about 2 km across, was formed by several eruptions over the last 400,000 years and is protected as a nature reserve. Endemic plants along the rim include Azores juniper and Azores heather. The loop is about 6.2 km long, with some 275 m of climbing.
