Trail description

The walk starts at the viewpoint beside the fort and parish church of Cacela Velha, a village on a hill above the easternmost lagoon of the Ria Formosa, takes the steps down to the water and follows the sandy shore path west to Fábrica. The fort stands on the site of a Muslim castle and was rebuilt between 1770 and 1794 after the 1755 earthquake; it has been used by the Guarda Fiscal, now part of the GNR, since 1897, so its interior is closed to visitors. At Fábrica, a small fishing village, fishermen take people across the lagoon to the beach on the barrier island in summer. The walk is about 1.0 km one way, with some 10 m of climbing.
