Cabo Espichel

Trail description

A 1.5 km clifftop walk from near the lighthouse at Cabo Espichel north-east along the plateau at about 130 m above the Atlantic, south of Sesimbra. The lighthouse dates from 1790, and nearby stands the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo, built in the 17th and 18th centuries with pilgrim lodgings on both sides of the church. The cliffs hold Jurassic dinosaur trackways at Pedra da Mua, which legend explained as the hoofprints of the Virgin's mule.
