Baía de São Lourenço

Trail description

The walk starts at the Miradouro São Lourenço, descends to the seafront of the Baía de São Lourenço and climbs from the shore to the Miradouro do Barreiro. About half of it follows the Ramal para São Lourenço, the access road into the bay, and the rest stepped paths through the vineyards. The amphitheatre-shaped bay lies in a volcanic crater whose seaward rim collapsed, and its slopes are planted with vines in small plots divided by hedges or low basalt walls, where the local São Lourenço wine is made. The bay is protected as part of the Santa Maria Island Natural Park. The walk is about 3.3 km one way, with some 250 m of climbing.
