Sun Gate Inti Punku

Trail description

A 3.1 km walk with about 285 m of climbing from the Machu Picchu citadel up the Inca Trail to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, at 2 km, then about 1 km on down the trail beyond it. Inti Punku, 'sun door' in Quechua, was once a fortress of Machu Picchu and its main entrance. The name is also used for the final section of the Inca Trail between the Sun Gate and the city.
