Trail description
Walk from the village of Quinua up to the 44 m obelisk on the Pampa de la Quinua, where the Battle of Ayacucho was fought on 9 December 1824. The patriot victory sealed Peru's independence and ended the last major Spanish land campaign in South America. The obelisk carries sculptures of the patriot commanders, among them Antonio José de Sucre. The battlefield is protected as the Pampa de Ayacucho Historic Sanctuary, about 37 km from the city of Ayacucho.
