Kuélap Fortress

Trail description

A 1.9 km walk of about 155 m of climbing on the approach to the Kuelap citadel of the Chachapoyas culture, passing the site's interpretation centre and reaching about 2,990 m on its limestone ridge. Most of Kuelap was built between 900 and 1100 AD; its walls are 10 to 20 m high and enclose some 420 structures, almost all of them round. The cable car from Nuevo Tingo, opened in 2017, stops about 2 km from the fortress, which is reached on foot or on horseback.
