Trail description
A nearly flat 2.3 km walk at about 4,200 m on a path among the rock formations of the Bosque de Piedras de Huayllay, from the edge of Huayllay to the La Calera thermal baths and the Carretera Vencedores de Sángrar, in the Pasco region. The stone forest is the main attraction of the Huayllay National Sanctuary, a protected area of 6,815 hectares set up in 1974 on the Meseta de Bombón. Wind, water and moving glaciers have eroded its mostly volcanic rocks into figures that resemble people and animals, and into arches large enough for a rider on horseback to pass through; there are also rock paintings. Among the rocks rises a hot spring of more than 60 °C, which some credit with healing properties.
