Baneheia Loop
Trail description
A 1.8 km loop with some short climbs on the forest paths of Baneheia, the town forest just northwest of the Kvadraturen in Kristiansand, from the town end by Tordenskjolds gate past 2. Stampe, over the 73 m Baneheia hilltop and back along 3. Stampe and Svarttjønn. Christian IV gave the forest to the town's citizens when Kristiansand was founded in 1641, and its paths and lit trail make it the town's favourite walking area all year. The Stampe lakes are named after a fulling mill set up in the town in 1704 and driven by water from Baneheia; they were dammed for the town's first waterworks in 1843. 3. Stampe, the largest, is a popular swimming lake in summer, with sand beaches and jetties, and on its town side lies Kjempesteinen, two great boulders left by the inland ice.
