Trail description

Kajmakchalan (2,521 m) on Nidzhe is the highest summit of the Macedonian-Greek border and a First World War battlefield, where Serbian forces took heavy losses in September 1916. This approach follows the Nidzhe ridge from the north, and most of it, over 90% of the distance, is on a jeep track, with only the final steep stretch to the summit on a path. It is about 12 km one way with close to 1,000 m of ascent; much of it is easy walking on the road and there are no steep climbs until the very end. At the top are the chapel of St Peter and a crypt built by Serbian forces for their fallen soldiers, with views down to the Ostrovo and Petersko lakes in Greece.
