Trail description
Short out-and-back walk from the village of Apanás down to Playa Apanás on the shore of Lake Apanás, about 5 km north of Jinotega. The lake was created in 1964 by damming the Tuma, Jigüina and Mancotal rivers for hydroelectric power, making it Nicaragua's first artificial lake, about 54 km² in area. Local communities fish for tilapia, guapote and catfish from wooden canoes, and herons and ducks are common on the water. It was declared a Ramsar wetland of international importance in 2001.
