Mount Kaukau Track

Trail description

A 1.9 km climb of about 250 m from Khandallah Park to the summit of Mount Kaukau (445 m), in Wellington's northern suburbs. The summit is the most visible high point in the Wellington landscape, made more so by the city's main television transmitter mast 122 m from the top. It looks over the city, the harbour and the Remutaka and Tararua Ranges, and on a clear day the Kaikōura Ranges in the South Island. Kaukau is part of the Northern Skyline track, and kererū, tūī and fantails are common in the native forest on its slopes.
