Trail description
The Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway follows the old railway line through the gorge from Karangahake to Waikino, about 7 km. It passes the foundations of the Crown Battery, crosses the Ohinemuri River on steel truss bridges and runs through a well-lit former rail tunnel 1,100 m long. Further east it passes Owharoa Falls and the Victoria Battery site, built in 1897 and once the largest and most advanced quartz-crushing plant in New Zealand.
