Trail description
A long 19.5 km climb of about 1,280 m from Brook Street in Nelson, up the Coppermine Trail and the Dun Mountain Trail to the summit of Dun Mountain (1,129 m). The Coppermine Trail follows the incline section of the Dun Mountain Railway, a 21.5 km horse-drawn tramway that carried chromite from mines on the eastern slopes of Wooded Peak down to Nelson port. Opened in 1862 and run until 1901, it was the first railway to operate in New Zealand. The chromite deposit between Wooded Peak and Dun Mountain was found by the runholder George Duppa in the winter of 1853.
