Atiwhakatu Track

Trail description

A 6.5 km tramp with about 230 m of climbing from the Holdsworth road end, past Holdsworth Lodge and up the Atiwhakatu Stream valley to Atiwhakatu Hut in Tararua Forest Park. After a bridge over the Atiwhakatu Stream a wide, flat track runs through mixed podocarp and broadleaf forest to Donnelly Flat, which has a picnic area and camping places. Further up the valley a slip needs a small scramble to cross, and there are steep drop-offs beside the track. Atiwhakatu Hut has 26 bunks and must be booked, which makes the track a good first overnight tramp. The Tararua Ranges have wild, fast-changing weather, so carry warm and waterproof clothing.
