Holtingerveld Havelterberg

Trail description

A 2.6 km walk with 6 m of climb near Havelte, from the Schierbosweg at Darp into the Holtingerveld after about 0.9 km and on across it to the Holtingerweg, with almost half of the way on the Startbaan, a runway of the former German wartime airfield. The Natuurmonumenten reserve has wet and dry heath, drift sand and fens; orchids flower on the old runway, and more than 2,500 bomb craters from the heavy Allied bombing at the end of the war now lie in the field as pools and hollows. The low Havelterberg with the hunebeds D53 and D54 is about 0.8 to 1 km north of the line. Dogs are welcome on a lead.
