Trail description

Tacaná is a stratovolcano on the border of Chiapas and Guatemala, and at 4,060 m it is the second highest peak in Central America. This route climbs from the Mexican side in the municipality of Unión Juárez, on mountain paths that pass several shelters on the way up. The summit is dominated by lava domes and calderas, and the boundary between the two countries runs across it. The volcano is still considered active, with its last small phreatic eruption in 1986.
