Trail description
Walk from the centre of San Pablo Villa de Mitla past the South Group to the Group of the Columns, the finest buildings of the Zapotec site of Mitla in the Tlacolula valley. Its name comes from the Nahuatl Mictlán, 'place of the dead'; in Zapotec it is Liobaa, 'house of tombs'. The palaces are covered in stone mosaics of geometric frets (grecas), with cruciform tombs beneath them and a hall of monolithic columns. The site is run by INAH.
