La Bufa Guanajuato

Trail description

A 4 km climb of about 380 m from the streets of Guanajuato, across the Carretera Panorámica and up the Camino a la Cueva de San Ignacio to the cave of San Ignacio de Loyola, then on to the top of the Cerro de la Bufa. The hill rises very close to the city, and at sunset one of its rock formations looks like the profile of a bearded man's face, by tradition the face of Christ. Two caves consecrated to Ignatius of Loyola, known as the old and the new cave, lie on opposite sides of the summit. Each year on 31 July a pilgrimage goes to the new cave in honour of the saint.
