Trail description

Cerro Pelón is one of the protected overwintering sites of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site. This trail starts in the village of Macheros in the State of Mexico and climbs about 5 km through old-growth forest on the slope of an old volcano. Between November and March millions of monarch butterflies gather on its slopes. It is the least visited of the sanctuaries because the climb is steep, and many paths cross the forest, so a local guide is helpful.
