Trail description
A 1.6 km loop with about 30 m of climbing from the plaza of the Basilica of Guadalupe up the Tepeyac hill to the Capilla del Cerrito on its top, returning past the Capilla del Pocito. Tepeyac belongs to the Sierra de Guadalupe, which closes the Valley of Mexico to the north, and is part of the Parque Nacional del Tepeyac. According to Catholic tradition it is where the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, and the sanctuary at its foot receives millions of pilgrims each year, especially on 12 December. The hill was a place of worship before the Spanish conquest, and an image associated with Chicomecóatl was found during the excavations for the Capilla del Pocito.
