Озеро Шайтанколь (Каркаралы)

Trail description

A 4 km walk with about 290 m of climbing from the car park by Lake Pashennoye on the path to Lake Shaitankol, five kilometres west of Karkaralinsk in the Karkaraly mountains. The snow-fed lake, whose name means Devil's Lake, is ringed by weathered granite rocks layered like a pastry and grown with pine forest. Many legends surround it; locals say that in 1905 a cross set up on its western shore to rename it the Holy Lake soon vanished, and the old name returned.
