Mount Unzen Fugendake

Trail description

A 3.5 km climb of about 280 m to near the Fugendake summit of Mount Unzen, 1,359 m, reaching about 1,330 m. Unzen is an active volcano near Shimabara; in 1991 a pyroclastic flow killed 43 people, and the eruptions of 1990 to 1995 built the new lava dome of Heisei-shinzan, now the highest point at 1,486 m. In 1792 a dome collapse triggered a megatsunami that killed 14,524 people.
