Trail description

From the Tanohara car park at the end of the road, about 2,180 m up, the trail climbs past shrines and stone statues of the Ontake faith to Kengamine (3,067 m), the summit of Mount Ontake, Japan's second highest volcano. The mountain erupted without warning in 2014, killing more than 60 climbers; the summit opens only in the summer season, helmets are advised, and the trail closes when the alert level rises.
