Trail description

Oakan, 1,370 m, is a volcano rising over Lake Akan, home of the marimo moss balls, and with Meakan it is one of Japan's 100 famous mountains as Akandake. This route starts near the lake outlet and passes the Taro and Jiro ponds before climbing through forest to the summit. An eighth-station weather station was staffed here from 1944 to 1946. The mountain was classed as an active volcano in 2011.
