Mount Meakan from Onneto

Trail description

Meakan is a group of eight volcanoes in the southwest of the Akan caldera, with its main peak Ponmachineshiri at 1,499 m, one of Japan's 100 famous mountains as part of Akan. This route climbs from the Lake Onneto side through creeping pine and onto bare volcanic slopes toward the crater rim. The Ponmachineshiri and Nakamachineshiri craters are active and closely monitored by the JMA, so check the current eruption alert level before going.
